Urgent Fraud Alert for U.S. Non-Resident Aliens
We wanted to make you aware of a fraudulent email scam targeting cross-border families and foreign nationals like you. Please be on the lookout for an email that appears to be from the IRS and the Department of Treasury, claiming that in order to protect your status as exempted from U.S. taxes and reporting you must “Authenticate your W-8BEN form as soon as possible”.
This email appears to be sent from @irs.gov, and it asks you to open an attached W-8BEN form and complete with name, address, social security number and country of origin. It asks for the form to be faxed to a number along with a copy of your passport photo page. The email we’ve seen does not actually have a W-8BEN form attached; rather, it appears to be a malware program that launches when opened.
Please note: W-8BEN forms are for real, but they go directly to your financial institution, never to the IRS. Also, the IRS NEVER uses email to communicate with taxpayers…EVER!
